2012 Scavenger Hunt Rules

Scavenger Hunts will be held twice a year.

Six topics, determined by the Scavenger Hunt Chairperson(s), will be presented at the February and August fourth Thursday meetings. Members may enter one image in up to four of those topics. These photographs must be taken after the categories are announced.

Photoshop or other editing software may be used without limits on all categories. You may also submit the original picture so we can show it for comparison.

The entries should be turned in on a CD or by email to the Scavenger Hunt Chairperson(s) no later than the March and September fourth Thursday meetings. Submissions will not be accepted after this time. If you do not have a digital camera, you can have your photos scanned and put on a CD or we can arrange to have them scanned for you.

Competitor’s entries will be shown during the April and October fourth Thursday club meetings.
Ballots will be given to members present at those meetings to vote on their favorite entry in each category. These ballots will be tabulated during the meeting and the results (first, second and third places) will be announced. In addition, results will be posted on the Scavenger Hunt Blog and in the next edition of the Photogram.

It is hoped the Scavenger Hunt will be an event that allows you to get out of the box as a photographer and enable each person in the meeting to learn new ideas and techniques they can take home with them. It should also allow you to take a risk as a photographer and get valuable feedback on your work.

GUIDELINES FOR SAVING IMAGES TO EMAIL

OR CD FOR POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

To save your images for proper display on the projector, please follow these steps:
1. In Photoshop, go to “Image Size”
2. Uncheck the “Resample Image” box (optional)
3. Set the ppi to 96 (optional)
4. Recheck the “Resample Image” box
5. Set the Pixel Dimension of the largest side to 1024 pixels
6. Click OK
7. On the Toolbar, select “Edit > Convert to Profile…”, and set the color profile to the sRGB profile (probably sRGB IE61966-2.1). (NOTE: Skip this step if your image is already set on sRGB)
8. Finally, save the image as a jpeg with a quality setting of 12.

Points will be awarded per category toward the Photographer of the Year as follows:
1st Place: 3 pts
2nd Place: 2 pts
3rd Place: 1 pt.

The Scavenger Hunt chair may designate up to two topics as “Any Advanced Editing Permitted” and the use of Photoshop or other editing software may be used without limits (it is recommended that you also submit the original picture so we can show it for comparison). On the remaining topics, editing software may be used only for sensor-dust removal or for global edits such as cropping, contrast, brightness and

exposure.

Scavenger Hunt Rules for Fall 2010
Six (6) topics will be announced at the July 22 meeting.

The entries, members only, must be submitted on a CD or by e-mail to the Scavenger Hunt Chair no later than the August 26 meeting. (Gerry Toler mrtoler@sbcglobal.net)

Results will be presented and voted on at the September 9 meeting.

Members may enter four images (one image from four of the six categories)

These photographs must be taken after July 22, 2010.

Photographs must be “found” items, rather than “constructed”.
Definition per Encarta: “Scavenger hunt; a game in which people must obtain items on a list within a time limit and without buying them”.

There will be no “Anything Goes” category.

Editing software may be used only for sensor-dust removal or for global edits such as cropping, contrast, brightness and exposure.

Members present at the September 9 meeting will vote on their favorite entry in each category. These ballots will be tabulated during the meeting and the results (first, second and third place in each category) will be announced.

We viewed and voted on the results of the Spring Scavenger Hunt at tonight's camera club meeting. We will be posting the first, second and third place entries in all categories except duh and intimate. Due to a low number of entries in those categories we will only present the first place position. We hope to finish this entry by tomorrow evening.

A complete list of entries and photographers will be posted a day or two after that.

Thanks for participating in a great evening. We hope everyone enjoyed the new presentation format. We are always open to suggestions. Yes we will attempt to make the ballot printing larger next time!

Most of all thanks to everyone who participated in the hunt. We hope you had as much fun taking the pictures as we had putting the program together and seeing the pictures. My sincere apologies to Bob White who had two pictures I managed to turn wrong. But in the end even that turned out OK.

2) Creative lighting adds a lot of interest. Nice focus.

hypnotic. Great focus. Being in black & white increases the impact.

Missing the lower section of foreground detracts from photo. A little too bright
on top.

1) Another center within a center. I like the special effects that make the
plant appear to be floating on oil. A little blurry toward the upper left, but very
good detail overall. It makes me itch.
2) Simple yet effective. I like the fuzziness of the leaves. Very peaceful.
3) Good idea, but it needs something more, maybe more saturated color.
Highlight at bottom takes eye away from center.

FALL 2008 SCAVENGER HUNT GUIDELINES

It's Scavenger Hunt time again!

We have two Scavenger Hunts per year with a goal of capturing specific (preferably BRAND NEW) items. Three members are chosen as judges and the results are shown during the April and October club meetings.

We give a series of six topics to choose from and members turn in up to four on CD or by e-mail.

If you do not have a digital camera, please do not feel left out! You can have your photos scanned and put on a CD or we can arrange to have them scanned for you.

To ensure a fair competition, you may NOT use a program like Photoshop to manipulate an image using filters, layers, etc. You MAY, however, crop, adjust exposure levels, and sharpen the image, but that is all!

GUIDELINES FOR SAVING IMAGES TO E-MAIL OR CD FOR JUDGING AND POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

To save your images for proper display on the projector, please follow these steps:

In Photoshop, go to "Image Size"
Uncheck the "Resample Image" box
Set the dpi to 96
Recheck the Resample Image box
Set the output resolution to 1024 pixels by 768 pixels
On the Toolbar, select Image> Mode> Convert to Profile, and set the color profile to RGB. (NOTE: Skip this step if your camera is already set on RGB.
Finally, save the image as a jpeg with a quality setting of 10.

Great combination of lines and shapes. Nice lighting as well. This would
have been a killer shot with more depth of field.

Good use of lines - vertical diagonal and curving - in the ropes. I like the
interplay of light and dark colors as well. Good use of the light to show
texture. Nice image.

Like this shot!! Nice with the different colors of rope and directions they are
leading. Good lighting and composition. Fits category very well. Nice image.

Nice use of light. I like the mirror and the white background. A very
creative shot.

Very good composition - lines, diagonal and straight, work well together. Mirror a nice creative touch. Good texture and detail in the salt. A smidgen brighter overall wouldn't hurt - image doesn't "pop".

Like this image. Not sure about the relation to category (??) but like the shot.
Great light and composition. Great product shot.

2nd Place - Rita Szabo - Weather Vane

I don’t know how you did it but I think you did it quite well. I would like to
see a little more light in the grey parts but overall it’s a great idea that’s well
executed.

Image a little too centered - more space on right - somewhere for the cat to go. Would like to see all of the weather vane. Wind spped cup directly under the cat a little distracting. Image really fits the category.

Fits category well. Very spooky. Like the silhouette effect. Not sure about
composition - maybe more impactful from a different angle? Maybe a little too
centered or something.

Very creative. Obviously a lot of work and thought went into it. It would have been nice to see the apples slightly backlit. Beautifully done.

Very creative penmanship! Composition too centered - a receding diagonal might have been more interesting. Very nice image.

exposure! Cool shot! Would like to have seen the set up!

I really like this composition. Great color and patterns.

Good composition - Good use of the light. Main flower really holds my eye. Good background.
Beautiful! Great still life portrait. Lovely colors that pop from dark background. Nice placement of each flower. Great detail in petals and nice depth of field! Just lovely and want a copy for my wall - Tim could you get on that! :0)

3rd Place - Rita Szabo - Fall Mountain Scene

Nice colors and composition. Does anyone besides me want to throw a
rock in the water?

Nice diagonal with the shoreline to lead eye toward the mountain and
reflection. Nice balance between lake and shore.

Like the composition on this. Wonderfully, beautiful landscape shot. Doesn't
say "Autumn" to me that much, but still very beautiful. Nice shot!

VERY NICE! I remember these. Would like to see a little darker darks.

Great diagonal juxtaposed with repetitive circles. I love it! Good exposure
and lighting - retained detail in highlights and shadows. Wonderful image - you
should market this one.

Cool! Love the diagonal composition here. Nice on the white background.
Nice simple, yet complicated lines. Great exposure and lighting! Love it -
nice commercial-looking image.

2nd Place - Angela Goodson Abbott - Repetitive Hallway

Nice lines and shapes. It would be nice to see something - some little thing -
breaking up the "centeredness" of this - maybe a partial view of someone
going in one of the doors.

Great perspective shot. Hallway carpet leads your eye right through the
image - no escape. Alternating light/dark shapes hold my attention. Almost a
haunting image - appreciate for the season. Hots spots on door jambs a little
distracting.

Like this! Nice lines. Want to see how far the end of the hallway really is…
Wishing for a little higher contrast in blacks and whites, but great image.

3rd Place - Lori Decker - Repetitive Laundry

Good idea. Would like to see better lighting. Like the stack of towels.

Good placement of subject. Top of washer and dryer in center a little
bothersome - dryer door on right helps, though. Nice lighting.

Excellent image! Very creative! Love it. Want to see more of background
a little too cropped. Maybe horizontal? Excellent photo!

Right place, right time. Nice lines in this image. Great detail, composition,

Good use of diagonals with the jaws and between the two eyes. Good
depth-of-field. Great image. Good lighting.

Not sure how creepy they are; kinda cute actually (minus the blood - that's
creepy.) Great image! Great exposure and composition. Nice shot!

2nd Place - Lori Decker - Spotted Lizard

1. I really like the subject and the pose. Great timing.
2. A bit more depth-of-field - nose is a little soft. Good diagonal with rock
countered by lizard. I think he's cute, not creepy. A little too centered maybe.
3. Great image! Nice rock in foreground. Like that his spots pop out against
background spots and that his front foot is in focus, but back one is not. Looks like he's crawling up to say, "Howdy!" Nice image!

3rd Place - Lisa Murphy - Fuzzy Centipede

A unique viewpoint. Well done!

Good use of diagonals with fence. Nicely blurred background. A touch more
depth-of-field - I'd like to see all of the centipede in focus. Having him on the
underside of the wire a nice touch. Nice lighting.

Cute little feller! Like the detail in the "hair". Wire that he is on is a little
distracting to me - maybe a different angle. Good exposue and color on his face.

Nice lines and shapes and great idea. Good composition.
Love the diagonals and bright colors. Can almost feel the cool. Good
composition and good exposure - texture in the ice. Great shot.
Fun idea for "Beat the Heat". Tough to make ice bags very exciting! Also, tough to expose. Maybe more exciting in B & W or with some ice out dripping??? Hmmmm!

The October Scavenger hunt results are in! First of all we had 14 members participate this time around and some first timers too. This contest is always a lot of fun because you see so many different ideas to one topic and some of them make us laugh and so do the judges comments.
